Tay Ping Hui signs with Perfect World Pictures to pursue regional opportunities

Actor shares that Mediacorp connected him with wider opportunities while Mediacorp clarifies its stance on contracting artistes.

Singapore, 9 March 2018 – Tay Ping Hui is starting a new chapter of his acting career in the regional market, signing on with Perfect World Pictures (Singapore), with the fullest support and encouragement of Mediacorp, the Singapore media company with which he has worked for two decades.

Making his acting debut in 1998, Ping Hui catapulted to the top of the industry’s A-list within a year by winning Best Supporting Actor at Star Awards 1999 for his stellar performance in Stepping Out 《出路》.  Consistently nominated for his acting chops, Ping Hui won Best Actor award for his role in Bountiful Blessings 《万福楼》 and one other Best Supporting Actor award for his role in Unriddle 2   《最火搭档 2》.  He was awarded the All-Time Favourite Artiste status at Star Awards 2012 after being voted Top 10 Most Popular Male Artiste in the preceding years since 2000.

Ping Hui’s recent performance as Genghis Khan in the Chinese production The Legend of the Condor Heroes 《射雕英雄传》garnered rave reviews from the Chinese community.  Executive Producer Guo Jing Yu said of him: “Ping Hui has a lot of vibrant energy. Producers and directors admire his manly charisma and his well-maintained physique.”

Going beyond acting, Ping Hui made his directorial debut in the feature film, Meeting the Giant 《再见巨人》in 2014 which he also produced for release in Singapore, Malaysia and China.

Ping Hui said: “It is every actor’s desire to venture overseas. Mediacorp introduced me to Mr Guo and things took off from there. The challenges I faced when I was in China were real and tough, but the training, development and experience I have gained through my years in Mediacorp has prepared me well, as I am sure it will be for the future ahead.”

Added Ping Hui: “This is definitely not goodbye – why should it be?  No doubt I will be focusing most of my energy on the China market but I would be delighted to work with Mediacorp again if the role is suitable and my schedule allows. As for these coming months, Singapore viewers can still catch me on Tanglin and a new Chinese drama, Babies On Board, which will debut in May this year.”

Doreen Neo, Chief Content Officer, Mediacorp said: “We encouraged Ping Hui, one of our best talent, to put his skills to work in different environments, including overseas, as such exposure can only add to his skillsets. We are proud of his achievements and our role in providing him with a platform for his talent.”

Ms Neo added: “Mediacorp enjoys a broad range of relationships with artistes, from per show contracts to annual hours of commitment that vary with each artiste, according to the needs of both parties. We have practiced such variation and flexibility for more than a decade because we understand that artistes would like to pursue opportunities in the industry as well as their personal passions. Working with Mediacorp on a project basis gives artistes the most flexibility. Whichever arrangement, we seek to work with the best person for any role. As the media company with the widest range of platforms in Singapore, Mediacorp has an integral role to play in finding and nurturing talent in the industry.”

As a start to this new chapter, Ping Hui will be cast in an upcoming Chinese period drama Handsome Siblings 《绝代双骄》, as well as a redux of The Awakening to be produced by Perfect World Pictures (Singapore). The intellect property rights to The Awakening 《雾锁南洋》and another of Mediacorp’s earlier drama serials, The Little Nyonya《小娘惹》have been acquired by Perfect World Pictures.

John Ho, CEO of Perfect World Pictures (Singapore), said: “We are delighted to have Ping Hui as the first Singapore celebrity artiste managed by Perfect World Pictures. There has been growing interest in China in Mediacorp’s evergreen dramas such as The Awakening and The Little Nyonya. Having obtained the IPs from Mediacorp, we are optimistic that the remaking of these series – starring Ping Hui and actors from China – will be a hit with audiences in China, Singapore and the region.”

The Awakening is scheduled for release in late 2019.
